Gel Plates: A More Flexible Approach to Surface Decoration Friday, August 9th, 6:00-8:00PM with Tess Lawlor
If you’ve tried stencils, screen printing, paper monoprinting, underglaze transfers, painting or any other surface decoration techniques there are some common problems that arise: -How to get a flat piece of paper, stencil or transfer to conform to the round surfaces we encounter in the world of clay. Having stencils leak under the edge and mess up the image . -Pulling a screen print off your pot only to find that the print is too light, images are blurred or inconsistent. -Trying to paint on curved and vertical surfaces and struggling to control drips and runs that can ruin your design.
Students will cover how Gel plates give you the freedom to make your mark on the curves of your pottery by conforming to the surface in a way other techniques fall short on and show you how you can stencil, screen print, transfer, paint directly or layer them onto the Gelli plate, before you commit to putting it on the pot.
Leather hard and bisqued tiles, underglazes, stencils, screen prints, transfers and of course Gel plates, will be available to practice with. You're welcome to bring your own pots and any surface decoration materials/underglazes you’d like to practice with. Firings are not included in the price of this workshop for non-members.
